Cairo Chronicles: When Mo Salah, Camels, and Papyrus Collide
Embarking on an Egyptian Escapade: The Tom and Jerry Edition
In February 2022, my mate Tom and I embarked on the second
leg of our exhilarating journey, travelling from Jordan to Cairo, Egypt.
Bursting with excitement to explore the historic city of Cairo, the world's
sixth-largest by population in one city and teeming with wonders, our
jam-packed itinerary included the iconic Pyramids, the Ancient Egyptian Museum,
sampling camel meat, and reconnecting with old and new friends. This adventure
was truly a once-in-a-lifetime experience, brimming with excitement and
surprises at every turn.
Camel Rides, Pyramid Hops, and the Papyrus Shop Conspiracy
On our first day, we enlisted a local tour guide to escort
us on a camelback tour around the Pyramids. This proved essential in avoiding
the notorious area tour guides who follow people throughout there Pyramid experience. However, before reaching the Pyramids, we
experienced the infamous papyrus shop lock-in. The lights went out, and we
found ourselves surrounded by glowing papyrus. After 15 minutes of politely
declining purchases, we were finally allowed to leave. Continuing on horse and
carriage through the chaotic streets, we closed in on the entrance to the
Pyramids, where our camel journey began. My camel seemed to despise me, while
Tom's was as docile as they come. Yet, we were accompanied by a friendly horse
that enjoyed posing for photos. The Pyramids and Sphinx were breathtaking
sights, with photos unable to capture their true grandeur.
Although our hotel-recommended tour company overcharged us,
the actual guide who accompanied us was knowledgeable and informative. We
delved into the fascinating history of the Pyramids of Giza, learning about
their construction, the estimated number of workers, and the significance of
their location on the west bank of the River Nile. We also discovered the
intriguing ball and socket construction of the cornerstones and the mystery
surrounding the transportation of the massive stone blocks.

Mummies, Gold, and Sarcophagi: Raiding the Egyptian Museum
On day two, we visited the Egyptian Museum, a treasure trove
of captivating artifacts and relics. King Tut's treasures and various
sarcophagi were among the highlights. We will explore the museum in more detail
in a separate post.
Cairo's Streets: The Real-Life Wacky Racers and Furry Friends
Cairo was a bustling metropolis, with its chaotic airport
and unruly streets. It felt like a scene from Wacky Racers, complete with sad sight of sleeping Egyptians on roadside verges, roaming cats and dogs, and even dogs
perched atop cars. Crossing the roads was an adrenaline-pumping experience, and
the cacophony of mosque loudspeakers added to the city's unique charm.
From McDonald's to Camel Meat: A Gastronomic Adventure in Cairo
Cairo's culinary scene did not disappoint. Even McDonald's
earned a respectable 6/10 from us. Our meals ranged from mouthwatering steak to
a feast of falafel, lamb, hummus, pittas, and rice with our German friends from
Jordan. We also sampled camel meat, which was tough but worth a try for the
adventurous eater. The evening culminated in catching the Pyramid light show at
their hotel and enjoying a few well-deserved beers.
Cruising the Nile and Swanky Soirées: From Gridiron to Glamour
Our final night in Cairo involved a riverboat cruise on the
Nile, indulging in exquisite food and beer. We met a former NFL player and
spent the evening at a swanky cigar bar in the Kempinski hotel, sharing stories
and sipping cocktails with fellow travellers and digital nomads.
Cairo was a thrilling yet challenging experience, perfect
for history and culture enthusiasts. Opting for a tour company may suit the
less intrepid. The Pyramids, the Sphinx, and the Egyptian Museum were
awe-inspiring, while navigating the city's lively streets and savouring its
culinary delights made for unforgettable encounters. Adjusting to the city's
pace may take time, but the rewards are well worth it. The friendly locals,
with their curiosity about our love for Mo Salah, the beloved Egyptian football
star, provided amusing interactions and a running joke among us British
travellers.
